A testimonial carries weight only because the person could have declined to give it. Every shortcut in this task type works by quietly removing that condition, and audiences read the result faster than marketers expect.
What to put in the public brief
- That the task requires genuine prior use of the product
- What proof of that you will accept
- Video length and whether they appear on camera
- The licence you are buying, in plain terms
- That an unfavourable testimonial is paid the same
Keep the product name private if you are pre-launch, and keep any customer list entirely out of it.
What to put in the private instructions
Ask for the specific rather than the general
"What did you do before this, and what changed" produces something usable. "Tell us what you like about it" produces an advert nobody believes.
Give the disclosure line verbatim
If it will run as advertising, the disclosure is your obligation and not theirs to invent.
Say what not to claim
No outcomes they cannot personally attest to, no numbers, no comparison to a named competitor. A testimonial that makes a performance claim becomes a performance claim you have to substantiate.
State the licence again where they will read it
The brief is where consent is given, and consent given at the point of filming is worth more than consent inferred from a payment.
Proof worth requiring
Ask for
The raw file, and evidence of genuine use — an order number, an account email, or a screenshot of their own account. Verify it against your records before approving.
Do not ask for
A second take that is more enthusiastic. The moment you request that, you have started paying for the verdict, and everything the testimonial was worth is gone.
Where the edit crosses the line
Trimming a pause is fine. Cutting the qualifying clause out of "it was expensive but worth it" produces a sentence the customer never said. Send the cut for approval before publication: it costs a day and prevents the only version of this that ends badly.
If you want a produced advert rather than a testimonial, a UGC product demo is the honest way to buy one, and it does not borrow credibility it has not earned.
